Filósofo político alemán radicado en EE.UU. Miembro de la escuela de Francfort, huyó de Alemania después que el nazismo tomó el poder en 1933. Luego de trabajar en la inteligencia estadounidense durante la segunda guerra mundial, enseñó en varias universidades, principalmente la Universidad de Brandeis (1954–65) y la Universidad de California en San Diego (1965–76). En su obra más conocida e influyente, El hombre unidimensional (1964), Marcuse sostuvo que la sociedad bajo el régimen capitalista avanzado es represiva y no libre, y que el hombre moderno se ha vuelto intelectual y espiritualmente complaciente debido a su dependencia psicológica de los halagos de la sociedad de consumo, fenómeno que llamó "desublimación represiva. También fue hostil al sistema soviético. Sus obras fueron populares entre los estudiantes de izquierda, especialmente después de las rebeliones estudiantiles ocurridas en 1968 en la Universidad de Columbia y en la Sorbona. También escribió Eros y civilización (1955) y Contrarrevolución y revuelta (1972).
